Book Design | Page Layout | Cover Design

Format:
11 x 8 inches with 1 inch spine
Material treatments:
Hard cover with glossy, embossed foil stamping and glow-in-the-dark spine
Cover Design Process:
On the cover, Flavin's name is sculpted by stiff lines that represent the medium he famously worked with - fluorescent tubes. I decided to make the cover white because it reflects how red, green, and blue light mixed together results in white light. A white cover also denotes the grand gallery spaces that Flavin's work is typically installed in. Flavin often focused on the relationship between the medium and the spaces it inhabited. By writing his name like his sculptures and placing it in the corner of the cover, it imitates his work and his use of space.
The spine is inspired by one of his brilliant installations, Untitled (to Henri Matisse), 1964. A minimal style is incorporated throughout the catalogue, reflecting Flavin's early involvement in the Minimalist art movement.
